BerlinMuseum Island

Explore Museum Island Berlin: Home to world-class museums

Museum Island, a UNESCO-Heritage site on the Spree River in central Berlin, is home to five world-renowned museums, forming one of the most interesting museum complexes in the world. The ensemble includes the Altes Museum, Neues Museum, Bode Museum, Pergamon Museum, and Alte Nationalgalerie, each housing treasures from ancient relics and classical sculptures to 19th-century art.

Things to know before booking Museum Island tickets

  • 5 museums, one island – The 21-acre Museum Island complex is home to five world-renowned museums. You can purchase individual museum entry tickets or opt for the Berlin WelcomeCard Museum Island edition, which grants free entry to all five museums once per day for three consecutive days, along with unlimited public transport access.
  • Too many museums, too little time? Each museum has extensive collections, and rushing through them can be overwhelming. Stick to two per day to truly enjoy the exhibits. With the Berlin WelcomeCard, you can spread your visits across three days. Plan wisely!
  • Beyond Museum Island – If you're a museum enthusiast, consider visiting Neue Nationalgalerie (3 km away) and DDR Museum (just 400m from Museum Island) as well. The Berlin WelcomeCard not only offers discounted entry to these museums but also includes free travel on all public transport, making it easy to explore beyond Museum Island.
  • Museum hours & closures – Most museums are open 10am-6pm and are closed on Mondays. However, hours may vary on holidays, and certain exhibitions or areas may have separate schedules. Always check Museum Island timings in advance to avoid surprises.
  • Pergamon Museum renovation – The Pergamon Museum is closed for renovations until 2027.
  • Special exhibitions & extra costs – Some temporary exhibitions require separate tickets. Before booking, double-check what's included in your pass to ensure you don't miss any must-see displays.
  • Free & discounted entry – Many museums, including Altes Museum and Bode Museum, offer free entry for children under 17 and discounts for students. However, some, like the DDR Museum, have different pricing structures, so it's best to check in advance.
  • Accessibility & facilities – Most museums on Museum Island are wheelchair accessible, but some areas may have limitations. If you have specific accessibility needs, review individual museum facilities before your visit.

Frequently asked questions about Museum Island Berlin tickets

Can I purchase tickets at the museum entrance?

Yes, but ticket lines can be long, especially during peak season (May to September). Booking online 1-2 weeks ahead secures your spot.

Can I visit all five museums in one day?

While it's possible, it's not recommended. The museums have extensive collections that take time to explore. To avoid getting overwhelmed, plan to visit two museums per day for a more in-depth experience.

Is there a time limit on how long I can stay inside a museum?

No, once inside, you can explore at your own pace during the museum’s opening hours. Just be sure to arrive early enough to have ample time before the museum closes.

Are there any hidden gems or lesser-known exhibits on Museum Island?

Yes! Check out the small yet impressive Byzantine art collection at the Bode Museum. The Alte Nationalgalerie has a stunning rooftop view that many visitors overlook.

Is the DDR Museum part of Museum Island?

No, the DDR Museum is not part of Museum Island but is located nearby. You can easily combine it with your Museum Island visit if you plan accordingly.

Are there quiet hours for visitors who prefer fewer crowds?

Mornings right after opening and late afternoons tend to be quieter. Visiting midweek rather than weekends is also a good strategy to avoid crowds.

Is Museum Island worth visiting if I'm not a huge history buff?

Absolutely! Museum Island offers stunning architecture, peaceful riverside views, and diverse art collections beyond historical artifacts. Plus, the cultural atmosphere makes it an interesting experience for all.

Are pets allowed inside the museums?

No pets are allowed inside, except for service animals like guide dogs. Be sure to bring proper documentation if you're traveling with a service animal.
